India8217;s Somdev Devvarman sailed into the second round of the mens singles event at the French Open with a straight-sets win over Daniel Munoz-de La Nava.
It took Devvarman a little more than two-and-a-half hours to get the better of his Spaniard opponent 6-3 6-3 7-5. And thanks to this win,waiting for him at the other end of the second round encounter on Wednesday is the most successful player in pro tennis history,Roger Federer.
The 188th ranked Devvarman,however,has played the Swiss in the past 8212; a couple of years ago on the hard courts of Dubai. The Indian had lost in straight sets,6-3,6-3. But on clay and with his ability to run down balls for hours,the 27-year old will hope to make a better fist of their Court Phillipe Chatrier face-off.
On his part,Federer,the 2009 French Open champion,breezed past Spanish qualifier Pablo Carreno Busta 6-2,6-2,6-3 without a hitch on the first of three Sundays that marks this event at Roland Garros,the only Slam that lasts a period of more than two weeks.
Playing at Roland Garros for the 15th year in a row,Federer earned a big roar from after he closed out the victory with a picturesque backhand winner. Federer lost only seven points on his first serve and was broken just once by Carreno Busta.
