Referee battered by Afghan school player

Shejauddins indiscretion that resulted in him giving away a free-kick in the 70th minute of the match was only an extention of his teams frustration.

An under-17 quarter-final match of the Subroto Cup turned ugly when Afghanistans Steqlal High School player Shejauddin, who came on as a substitute, repeatedly hit and kicked referee A Rowan after he was red-carded.

Afghanistan were already two men and two goals down but their players continued to play rough against Ukraines Dynamo Kyiv. Shejauddins indiscretion that resulted in him giving away a free-kick in the 70th minute of the match was only an extention of his teams frustration.

Shejauddin started his assault by pushing chief referee Rowan, who is on Fifas Asia panel. The player then lifted the referee and threw him over his shoulder and then continued to punch and kick him. The assault lasted close to a minute. Referee Rowan suffered many a gash below his eyes, was bleeding from the mouth and needed first-aid treatment. He took no further part in the game, which resumed after a 10-minute delay.

Subroto Mukerjee sports education society secretary VN Singh said: I will talk to the referee Rowan and the coach of the Afghanistan team before deciding on the next course of action. This is an unfortunate incident and the player will have to face the consequences of his action.
