The quality of the football Barcelona played during a record-breaking season makes their Spanish league title completely deserved. With three games remaining,Barcelona have 86 points, one point more than the previous best set by Real Madrid last season. And coach Pep Guardiolas side requires five goals from their final three games to beat Madrids record of 107 goals in 1990-91.
Barcelonas prowess this season has been such that they put six goals past Madrid,Sporting Gijon,Valladolid,Malaga and Atletico Madrid, five past Almeria and Deportivo La Coruna.
Yet the Catalan team made their worst start to a season for 25 years,a point from their opening two games piling pressure on the untried Guardiola. When Barcelona stormed to a 6-2 win over Madrid however the first time Madrid had conceded half a dozen goals in a home match for 58 seasons it left them on the brink. AP
Inter seal it too
Inter Milans fourth successive Serie A title was celebrated outside the citys famous Duomo, but the triumph masked an underwhelming season. Jose Mourinhos side clinched the title on Saturday when city rival AC Milan lost 2-1 to Udinese and left them an insurmountable gap in the standings. .
The championship drew Inter level with Milan on 17 titles, but Juventus were still out front with 27.
There was little disputing the season wasnt stellar for Italian football, reflected by Inter facing no challenge for top spot for the last four months. Juventus were still rebuilding in their second year back in Serie A,whilst AC Milan were clearly past their sell-by date.
