Sri Lankan cricket legend turned politician Arjuna Ranatunga has vowed to launch a crusade against corruption, asking his countrymen to join hands to help root out the menace the way they joined in the war against terrorism.
Ranatunga, who captained the World Cup winning cricket team in 1996,drew the flak from his detractors for his outspoken attitude when he was the chairman of Sri Lankan Cricket, leading to his sacking in December last year.
Subsequently in January this year,Ranatunga, who is a Member of Parliament, challenged the decision to sack him in the Supreme Court and sought an hefty compensation for bringing disrepute to his name.
“I have begun the war to end corruption and fraud,” Ranatunga said here yesterday, while addressing a function to felicitate War hero Major General Shavendra Silva.
Ranatunga said the war against LTTE might have ended but the war against corruption and fraud had not.
“It has been a while since I started this war as a member of parliament. I believe that I will be able to win this war before the end of our time and provide strength for the President,” he said.
“At the same time,I wish that all of you will contribute towards this journey just as you did on the journey undertaken to end the war,” he said.
Ranatunga had last year sought an investigation in the Parliament on television deals on marketing the right to telecast international matches in Sri Lanka.
While one of Ranatunga’s brothers,Prasanna,is the chief minister of the Western Provincial Council, another of his sibling Nishantha is the secretary of the Interim Committee of the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).
