Success,it8217;s often said, has many fathers. Failure,at least in the IPL,has only one: the coach. When the Deccan Chargers finished at the bottom of the table in the first season, head coach Robin Singh was shown the door. John Buchanan and Tom Moody got the sack after the Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab finished last in the second and the third season, respectively.
On Saturday two jobs 8212; of the Delhi Daredevils coach Greg Shipperd and Pune Warriors8217; Geoff Marsh 8212; are expected to be on the line when the bottom-placed teams face each other at the Ferozeshah Kotla in their last game of the season, one that began in contrasting fashion for the two sides.
The two-time semi-finalists Delhi, having made some logic-defying decisions in the pre-season auction, were expected to be a one-man army in IPL IV. And one-man army they turned out to be,winning only when Virender Sehwag fired.
Different story
Pune8217;s story unfolded differently. The strongest bench in the competition was evident in the way the Yuvraj Singh-led side won their first two matches. But that was when the wheels came off,as they went onto lose seven matches on the trot. And,sure enough, they never quite recovered from there.
Their domestic picks, except for the leg-spinner Rahul Sharma, never quite set the stage afire, while the international recruits, such as Jesse Ryder, blew hot and cold. Yuvraj led with the bat only, and his captaincy raised a few eyebrows. In the last match, his decision to come at No.6,despite being the team8217;s top-scorer,confounded fans and critics alike.
Incidentally,Yuvraj, for the second season in a row, might end up being associated with team that finished last, after having earned the dubious distinction with Punjab in 2010. While Yuvraj may escape the blame, his coach Marsh 8212; and fellow Aussie Shipperd 8212; might not be as lucky.
