After weeks of speculation,Sourav Ganguly has been replaced by New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum as captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders team for the second Indian Premier League.

In a decision announced by coach John Buchanan on Friday,McCullum will take over the reins while Chris Gayle,Ganguly and Brad Hodge will help the Kiwi keeper in his duties.

This format is a modified version of the much-debated multiple-captain theory and a compromise towards handling the outrage of die-hard Ganguly fans back home in Kolkata. “There was obviously some speculation about multiple captains,” Buchanan said. “We’ve appointed Brendon, who is very pleased. He has the support of Sourav Ganguly,Brad Hodge and Chris Gayle as senior members.”

The move was first discussed over dinner last night and was put through another round of intense debate between owner Shah Rukh Khan,Sourav Ganguly, other senior members and Buchanan before the latter made the news public.

Owner Shah Rukh Khan supported the decision saying that “off late there has been a lot of pressure on Ganguly as captain. I hope taking the load off him will help him give his best. This decision was taken in Ganguly’s presence and he was a part of it. Like I said earlier, whatever we decide,it cannot be without Ganguly.”
