Iran 8216;will never compromise rights8217; in nuclear programme

Stressing nuclear programme is peaceful,Tehran's envoy slammed 'biased' western reporting.

Iran8217;s envoy to the IAEA said his country 8220;will never compromise its legitimate rights8221; in pursuing its atomic programme,despite a report strongly suggesting Tehran was engaged in nuclear weapons development.

8220;As a responsible state,the Islamic republic of Iran will never compromise its legitimate rights and will continue to comply with its commitments under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty,8221; Ali Asghar Soltanieh said,as cited by the official IRNA news agency.

8220;Iran will continue its peaceful nuclear activities. And,just as many other previous claims were proven baseless,this time also they will not bear any results,8221; he said.

Soltanieh stressed that Iran8217;s nuclear programme was entirely peaceful and that Iran would continue to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency,the UN8217;s nuclear watchdog.

His comments came a day after the IAEA released its report saying 8216;credible8217; evidence existed to suggest Iran had done work towards building nuclear warheads.

Soltanieh,who yesterday dismissed the report as 8220;politically motivated8221;,today accused IAEA chief Yukiya Amano of making a 8220;historic mistake8221; in releasing the document.

Amano had displayed 8220;unbalanced,unprofessional and political8221; behaviour in publishing the report,which contained 8220;false claims8221; based on information from Iran8217;s arch-foe the United States and other countries,Soltanieh said.

The United States used the report8217;s release to say it would seek to ratchet up pressure on Iran,which is already subject to international sanctions over its nuclear programme.

The IAEA said in its report it had 8216;serious concerns8217; over information that Iran 8220;has carried out activities relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device.8221;
