Indian opener Gautam Gambhir's shoulder injury that ignited a 'country versus club' row this week will keep him out of the impending tour of the West Indies. In another blow,in-peak-form southpaw Yuvraj Singh will also miss the entire tour because of a lung infection. Sachin Tendulkar has requested he be rested for the whole tour to spend time with the family. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni wants to rest for the ODIs but will captain the Test series. Pacer Zaheer Khan has been completely rested like Tendulkar. With Virender Sehwag out of reckoning earlier because of a shoulder injury, the Indian side coming off the rigours of a two-month IPL 4 will be led by the young Suresh Raina for the ODIs and the T20 matches. Shikhar Dhawan and Manoj Tiwary have been named as replacements for Gambhir and Yuvraj, for the Twenty20 and ODI series starting June 4. Tamil Nadu batsman Abhinav Mukund has also been named in the 16-member Test squad which will have VVS Laxman as vice-captain. Commenting on the Indian team selection,Chief selector K Srikkanth said the BCCI had selected the 'best side'. "When injury happens,it happens. There are medical reasons too. Considering all this,we have selected the best side," a visibly rattled Srikkanth said before skirting all other questions. 'The Indian Express' reported earlier this week that Gambhir, captain of Kolkata Knight Riders and the Indian ODI side for the West Indies tour next month, had an injury in his right shoulder. An MRI scan Tuesday put a question mark on his trip to the Windies. The exact nature of the injury was not yet clear. But fears were expressed that Gambhir might have to miss the campaign in the Caribbean. Gambhir was injured during KKR's league match against Mumbai at Eden Gardens. To recover,he might require surgery, rehab or plain rest. It is learnt that the injury is similar to that of his opening partner Virender Sehwag's,who played the World Cup and the IPL despite the discomfort.
