India bounced back from their first-match defeat in the three-test hockey series against England with a 4-3 win in the second game late on Friday in Birmingham. The Indians first wiped out a two-goal deficit,and then scored two more for their first win on the month-long European tour.
Arjun Halappa 35th minute,Dhananjay Mahadik 41st,Rajpal Singh 43rd and Gurvinder Singh Chandi 65th scored for India,while Ashley Jackson 22nd and 69th and Jonty Clarke 26th were on target for the hosts.
England began aggressively but met with stiff resistance from the Indian defence,particularly Sardar Singh in his new role of a sweeper back,in windy conditions amid a light drizzle.
Long wait
England created several chances in the first half and earned six penalty corners but had to wait for the last one in the 22nd minute to net the opener,when Ashley Jackson shot past Indian custodian Adrian DSouza. They doubled the lead in the 26th minute when Clarke stuck home a rebound after Matt Dalys shot had been saved by DSouza. India reduced the margin at the stroke of half-time from their first penalty corner.
The second half was much different,with the Indians going all out in attack. Two quick goals in as many minutes by Mahadik penalty corners and Rajpal Singh put India ahead by the 43rd minute.
Sardar Singh was outstanding with his crisp passes to Birender Lakra,Rajpal,Chandi and Pillay as the quartet gave the English defence no respite.
England earned two penalty corners off counter attacks but Jacksons efforts were thwarted by DSouza. India extended the lead when Chandi scored in the 65th minute,but Indias last-minute concerns resurfaced when England reduced the margin one minute before time.
