Sania Mirza and Poojashree Venkatesha notched up straight-set wins as India blanked Singapore 3-0 in a Group A rubber to get off to a flying start in the Asia/Oceania Group II competition of the Fed Cup on Thursday.

Poojashree made a good debut as she thrashed Si Ying Julienne Keong 6-1 6-1 in the opening rubber to give India a 1-0 lead. Seasoned campaigner Sania then clinched the tie for India by beating Stephanie Li Yun Tan 6-2 6-3 in the second singles. Rushmi Chakravarthy and Sanaa Bhambri combined to beat Clare Fong and Stefanie 6-0 6-2 in the inconsequential doubles rubber. India will take on Malaysia on Friday and will have to beat the hosts to top Group A and qualify for the play-off tie, where a win would take them back to Group I.

Privacy must be respected

With reference to the recent breaking off of tennis player Sania Mirzas engagement, the Delhi High Court criticised the way the electronic media covered the development. The right to privacy is very important. The way TV channels aired the stories on the breaking of the engagement of Mirza should be condemned. There was no respect to the sensitivity of the issue, said A P Shah,Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.

We,however, are ill-equipped when it comes to issuing guidelines for media coverage. Freedom of information is so important that no straight-jacket formula can be developed to address the problem, said Justice Shah.

The judge noted that a committee must be constituted to delve into the issue and prepare detailed guidelines within the framework of which all media organisations,TV as well print, must work so that there would be a balance between freedom of press and right to privacy of an individual.
