Govt probing claims of attempts on Fonsekas life: Report

Sri Lankan government said that it was investigating claims that there was an attempt to assassinate the former Chief of Defence Staff Sarath Fonseka.

Sri Lankan government today said that it was investigating claims that there was an attempt to assassinate the former Chief of Defence Staff Sarath Fonseka.

A newspaper report today alleged that the government is trying to hatch a conspiracy to kill retired Chief of Defence Staff Sarath Fonseka and we have asked the police to enquire into the matter, Director General of the Media Centre for National Security Laxman Hullugalle said.

The newspaper has also claimed that it has evidence of such a conspiracy and naturally in such allegations the blame comes on the government, he said,adding the Inspector General of Police is looking into the issue.

Meanwhile,the Daily Mirror reported that Minister for Disaster Management and Human Rights Mahinda Samarasinghe said that the Government was looking into the reports that Fonseka had not been in the country during the final stages of the war against LTTE.

There are reports that he was not in the island from the 10th to the 17th of May and we are looking into this, the minister said.

These are serious claims and they are being investigated under the orders of the Secretary of Defence Gotabya Rajapaksa,by the CID and the Police, he said.
