Allegations and counter-allegations were levelled, the Annual General Body Meeting was contentious, there was a dharna to protest the system of proxy voting and when counting was completed to elect eight office bearers and executive committee members of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA),the panel led by former India skipper Bishen Singh Bedi had to concede defeat.
Bedi had thrown his hat into the ring earlier this month in an attempt to give the DDCA a Test-cricketer president but only 285 votes were cast in his favour while Sneh Prakash Bansal got the lions share with 3,433. Former India medium-pacer Madan Lal too finished a distant second (172) to Sunil Dev (3,430) as the fight for the sports secretarys post was a one-sided contest. Former wicket-keeper batsman Surinder Khanna was defeated by Anil Khanna by a margin of 3,345 votes. The results that went against the Bedi-led panel meant that Bansal and Co,which has the backing of outgoing president and BJP leader Arun Jaitley has retained its hold over the DDCA.
The day started with the Annual General Body Meeting that was chaired by Jaitley but it was not an easy affair for those in power as questions were raised about the alleged financial irregularities in the DDCA,the proxy-voting system.
To move court
It was clear that neither the president nor the treasurer were interested in seriously answering questions. It has become a practice over the years to collect proxies and win farcical elections. Today, despite our exhorting the president several times to move a resolution to abolish proxy votes,he refused to do so. Left with no option we intend to move the courts and seek the winding up of the DDCA, Bedi said.
However,Bansal said that there was nothing illegal about the proxy-voting system. The proxy vote system is allowed in Companies Act. We are not doing anything illegal. There was an election and we have got the mandate,Bansal said.
Of the 4,300 members of the DDCA only 161 came in person to cast their votes on Monday. Samir Bahadur, who unsuccessfully contested for one of the vice-presidents posts claimed that Bedi had pipped Bansal 34 to 19 when it came to non-proxy votes.
Former India opener Chetan Chauhan, who was elected as one of the vice-presidents,said that once the first executive committee meeting was held,he would propose that former players, including Bedi be given a role in the current DDCA set-up. They have lost the elections but that does not mean we do not want their expertise. I will try to see in what best way players like Bedi can be part of the DDCA, Chauhan said.
