The AIFF may go back to the three-foreigner rule for the I-League clubs next season after AFCs new regulation, which allows four overseas players, met stiff opposition from most of the state associations during the federations Annual General Meeting on October 20.

In addition to the AFC stipulation, the AIFF also allows one PIO,which furthers the limit to five foreigners per team for the current season. But both national coach Bob Houghton and captain Bhaichung Bhutia have criticised the rule.

Initially, the clubs wanted to adhere to AFCs norms but Bob Houghton was always against the addition of foreigners to the clubs. In the last AGM,however,a consensus was reached among the state associations against the new AFC rule that allows four foreigners to play for every club. This year we have tried it out and a final decision on its existence next year will be taken by the executive committee in December-January, said AIFF general secretary Alberto Colaco.

The federation has set November 30 as the deadline for clubs and state associations to give their final opinions on the issue.
