This week, let us find out how prebiotics are essential for our good health. Prebiotics are substances found in our food that feed the probiotics beneficial micro-organisms present in the gut. Simply put, they can be called the probiotics8217; food. Inulin and Fructo-Oligosaccharides FOS are the newly discovered members of the carbohydrates family that act as prebiotics.nbsp;

So, how do prebiotics help? This family of carbohydrates8212;mainly found in various plant foods8212;is recognised for its health-promoting properties. See the box. nbsp;

Though they might sound a bit intimidating, prebiotics are found abundantly in nature. Inulin is a natural food ingredient that is found in more than 36,000 plants, including onions, garlic, and wheat. It is also present in large amounts in chicory roots. FOS, on the other hand, is a natural constituent of Inulin. Prebiotics are also found in breast milk .

Here8217;s a list of other food items that contain prebiotics: Chicory, which is added to coffee for flavor; oatmeal; flax seeds; barley; whole grainsnbsp;like wheat; greens especially dandelion greens, but also spinach, kale, collard greens, chard, mustard greens, etc; berries berries with seeds are excellent. For example, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, etc.; fruits like banana; legumes lentils, kidney beans, chickpeas, navy beans, white beans, black beans, etc.; vegetables asparagus, onions, garlic, tomatoes, artichokes Jerusalem artichoke, leeks. Fructo-Oligosaccharides and Inulins are available in nutritional supplements and functional foods. Recent studies have indicated that a dose of Inulin or FOS of 4-5 grams per day acts as a prebiotic.
