
BERLIN, AUG 29: India edged out hosts Poland 2-1 to set up a tough clash against Asian rivals South Korea in the final of the eight-nation Junior Challenge Open hockey tournament under-21 at Poznan, Poland yesterday.
Centre-forward Prabhjot Singh struck the all-important winner with a fine field goal six minutes from the final hooter after India8217;s 16th minute lead through full-back Len Aiyappa was neutralised by the spirited hosts late in the second half.
Aiyappa enabled India take the lead when he converted a penalty corner in the 16th minute but Bartolomiej struck the equaliser in the 57th minute off a penalty corner.
Jung Sion Lee scored the tournament8217;s third hat-trick as Korea toppled strong Germany 3-1 in the other semifinals after leading 2-1 at half-time.
Jung, who is the tournament highest scorer with seven goals, struck twice in quick succession in the 24th and 29th minute through a penalty corner and a field goal consolidated the lead with a 58th minute field goal.
German captain MaxLandshaut narrowed the lead with a field goal just two minutes left for half-time the first goal conceded by the Koreans in this tournament. Korea also top the scoring in the tournament with 24 goals.
Germany will now take on Poland in the match to decide the third and fourth places.
India rout Zimbabwe
NEW DELHI: Displaying superior skills and stick-work, India B8217; crushed Zimbabwe 4-1 in the second match to win the two-Test hockey series 1-0 at Harare according to information received here today.
After the first match ended in a 1-1 draw amidst poor umpiring, the Indians went into the lead as early as the 5th minute in the second game at the National Stadium on Thursday via forward Baljeet Singh Chandi.
Chandi received a excellent pass from Senthil made no mistake. Yoginder Rawat made it 2-0 in the 27th minute but the hosts pulled one back after the interval when Mike struck a field goal. The Indians, who completely dominated the second half, increased the lead to 3-1 through skipperRajesh Chauhan before Parminder Singh completed the tally.
The Indians will play five Tests against Kenya next as part of their two-nation African tour.

WELLINGTON: Sita Gussain scored three goals today to lead India to a 5-0 win over New Zealand, salvaging the final match in a three-Test series.India also got goals from Pritam Siwach and Mary Stella Tirkey and led 4-0 at half-time. New Zealand beat the visitors in the opening two games, including a 2-0 decision.
