CHANDIGARH, Jan 24: Eminent psychiatrist Prof N. N. Wig, in a lecture on, quot;Coping with present day stress, quot; organised by the Servants of the People Society at Lajpat Rai Bhawan here today, said the need of the hour was to quot;reorganise thinkingquot;. Prof Wig, who has been the former head of Psychiatry Department in PGI and is a WHO consultant, advised the people to take to positive ways of life to reduce the level of stress in their lives.

Dr. Wig said a certain level of tension was integral for the human mind but after it crossed a certain level, it became a problem. quot;At this point, the need to treat stress becomes important. This crucial point can be determined by the person under stress as the human body is endowed with a personal stress thermometer and can gauge the stress levelquot;, he informed.

He further stated that in the present day lifestyle, stress levels have increased drastically, causing acute depression and helplessness, resulting in long term effects on the human immune system.

He suggested the reorganisation of the thinking process from a negative one to a positive and healthy one by doing yogic exercises and walking etc.

quot;Interest in good music and good company are also ways to combat stressquot;, he said. He also said people tend to resort to wrong ways like drinking and taking sleeping pills to treat stress, forgetting the real cause in the process. He emphasized the need to understand family values and advised people to avoid self-medication.
