MUMBAI, May 28: The retirement age of port and dock workers was raised by the Centre today. Announcing this in the city today, the president of the All India Port and Dock Workers Federation, S R Kulkarni, said that while issuing the orders to all the major port trusts and dock labour boards, the government has also said that the increase in the age of retirement will be effective from the date of amendment to the recruitment rules and regulations.
However, since the major ports and dock labour boards are presently following the fundamental rules of the government in the matter of service conditions of port and dock workers, including that of the age of service conditions of port and dock workers including the age of retirement, Kulkarni had earlier urged the Minister for Surface Transport, Thambi Durai, to implement the orders of the government with immediate effect so that employees who are on the verge of retirement on May 31, 1998, can continue to be in service for the next two years.
