
BHUJ, NOV 30: The All-India Port and Dock Workers Federation, the largest in the country, has threatened a nationwide strike any time from January 1, 2000, if all wage-related issues of the port and dock workers are not settled by December 31.
A formal resolution to this effect was passed by the two-day national meet of the Federation early this week at Kandla, attended by top-level officer-bearers of its affiliates at all the 11 major ports in the country.
8220;Our federation, which has a membership of over 51 per cent at all the major ports and is the main negotiating member of the National Bipartite wage revision committee, is in the process of serving a formal notice to this effect. This time8217;s strike would be unique in that, for the first time it would be supported by the International Transport Workers Federation, which in turn has asked all workers the world over not to handle any ship to and from India,8221; Kandla unit general secretary of the Federation, Manohar Bellani, told The Indian Express.
Hesaid their wage revision had been due from January 1998, but the stand-off between the workers and port management continued over settlement of even basic issues.
