AUGUST 3: Nearly a lakh port and dock workers in the country will receive an aggregate wage rise of 35 per cent with retrospective effect from January 1, 1998 as per a settlement reached between the Federation of Port and Dock Workers and the Management of the Port Trust & Dock Labour Board.

At the Bipartite Wage Negotiation Committee meetings held in New Delhi from July 31 to August 1, 2000 it was concluded that dockers would be given higher fitment weightage at 27.5 per cent of the pay and the duration of settlement would be for 10 years, S R Kulkarni, president of the Federation said in a statement here today.

The wage negotiation committee comprises of 12 port and dock workers representatives and 13 representatives from the management of the Port Trust & Dock Labour Board. The two sides arrived at a settlement late yesterday.

Benefits accruing to workers include revision of payscales and allowances, assured career progression, enhanced port/city allowances, washing allowance and transport reimbursement, Kulkarni said adding, dockers would be entitled for an advance of Rs. 80,000 to procure a computer.

He said, the government had decided that the dock workers would also be paid House Rent Allowance (HRA) on revised pay from the date of expiry of the last settlement.

The settlement also provides for consolidation of pension by adding fitment weightage of 43 per cent of the pensioners, Kulkarni added.
