The death of a nine-month-old infant in Hardwar due to polio has turned the spotlight on Uttar Pradesh again8212; the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare suspects the case has a history of travel and that the virus might have spread from a neighbouring state. The UP government has been asked to look into the matter. The infant was among three cases spotted in Uttaranchal this year. From 2003, while Uttranchal reported two cases of polio, the three new cases this year have put the government on high alert.

Keeping in view increasing number of polio cases spreading from UP, the ministry is working hard to tackle the problem in UP itself, where the number of cases have reached to 269, as compared to 29 recorded last year. The districts of UP worst-hit by the virus are Moradabad, Muzaffarnagar, Badaun, Meerut, Bijnor and Rampur.

The government is considering import of injectable polio vaccine and the UNICEF is expected to rope in a celebrity to motivate people to get the drops administered to their children. Discussions are on with actor Farooq Shaikh for a visit to Muzaffarnagar.

8220;There is a misconception regarding administration of oral drops to children. If some celebrity comes forward to inform them about the disease and benefits of the drops, we can hope to influence the people. There will be more visits to Moradabad and various celebrities have shown interest to be the part of the campaign,8221; said a source in UNICEF.

Meanwhile, the Government of Saudi Arabia has issued instructions for people travelling from polio-endemic countries. 8220;For entry into Saudi Arabia, it will now be necessary to show an evidence of polio vaccination for the travellers with children below 15 years of age for all polio-endemic countries including India,8221; said Dr Jay Wenger, heading the World Health Organisation WHO National Polio Surveillance Project in India.
