SURAT, March 8: Teachers of a majority of private primary schools of the city launched an agitation by boycotting work on Monday even as leaders of the Surat Shahar Manya Khangi Prathamik Shikshak Sangh SSMKPSS who reached Gandhinagar to take part in a state-wide protest were prevented by the police from marching towards prohibited areas.
The police even resorted to lathicharge and burst teargas shells near the State Assembly in Gandhinagar to dispurse SSMKPSS leaders who were to meet the chief minister and education minister to press for their demands which included equivalent salaries as those of government teachers, implementation of the provisions of schedule F and other benefits.
Meanwhile in the city, besides teachers of primary schools run by the Sarvajanik Education Society SES, those working for a majority of private schools like Jeevanbharati, one run by Udhna Academy, those at Varachha Road and others stayed away from work as a mark of protest.
It may be noted that the SSMKPSS has been leading a sustained drive against private school managements and the district authorities against irregularities in inducting teachers into work, fee structure and other aspects. Although SSMKPSS president Dipak Patel and other office-bearers met the collector, DEO and office-bearers of the Nagar Prathamik Shikshan Samiti on a number of occasions, the deadlock continues.
Earlier, speaking to Express Newsline, Patel said that the teachers would be forced to resort to more stringent forms of protest if the talks with the chief minister and education minister on Monday failed.
