The two men apprehended for the rape of a South African national were produced in Bandra Holiday Court on Sunday and remanded to Police custody till January 6.

The duo, Suresh Krishnani and Sunil Morpani, had been arrested on Saturday from Ulhasnagar.

C R Hirani, their defence lawyer, said, 8216;8216;All the allegations are filmi. My clients are innocent and are co-operating with the police. They have accepted that they went to Hotel Bawa International that day but they did not rape her.8217;8217; He added, 8216;8216;The woman8217;s allegations are baseless and the arrest made by the police is not justified. They have no proof that these two are guilty. The names given by her are Rahul and Aditya while my clients have been arrested.8217;8217;

Assistant Commissioner of Police P N Sonawane, however, said that they have enough evidene against the two men and they had confessed to their involvement in the crime.

The two were taken to Nagpada Police Hospital on Sunday for medical examination. When asked about the medical reports of the victim, Sonawane said, 8216;8216;It has been confirmed that she was raped but we are still waiting to get the reports from our Forensic Laboratory in Kalina on whether any chemicals were mixed in her drink.8217;8217; Falguni Brahmabhatt, the victim8217;s lawyer, insisted that the two men arrested by the police were the culprits and that they had added something to her drink, the effect of which lasted for 2-3 days resulting in loss of appetite and drowsiness.

When asked about the visiting cards given to the victim by the two, which had crucially led the police to them, Brahmabhatt said, 8216;8216;Nobody who intends to rape a person will ever reveal his true identity to the victim.8217;8217;

The identification of the accused had not been done yet as the victim was out of town, said Brahmabhatt. It would be done in the next two-three days.

Explaining the arrests, Additional Commissioner of Police Parambir Singh said the police had started with credit card accounts and mobile numbers and these had led to a trail of evidences that culiminated in the arrest of the two men.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Shashikant Shindey said, 8216;8216;Morpani had given a visiting card to the victim. When he later tried to retrieve it from her she resisted and they beat her. But she didn8217;t give it back and that turned out to be the trump card for us.8217;8217;

Krishnani owns Narayan Wine store in Ulhasnagar and belongs to the Krishnani family that owns several departmental stores, trading companies and the Raja Medical Agency in Ulhasnagar.

T K Nathan, Suresh8217;s neighbour said, 8216;8216;Suresh lost his father on Friday after illness. He is a decent married man and a father of two. He can never do such a crime. We have seen him since childhood and know that he hails from a reputed family.8217;8217; Nathan said as far as Morpani was concerned, they did not know much about him. Morpani, alias Aditya, works in the film industry.
