
Varachha police on Tuesday night arrested a gang of five teenage robbers who specialised in robbing homosexuals. The police seized cash, jewellery, 22 mobile phones and diamonds from their possession.
The accused have been identified as Hiresh Vaghela, Jashu Maisurya, Ankit Chotalia, Yogesh Haryani and Sanjay Haryani, all residents of Varachha. The accused, who were arrested from Sardar Nagar area in Varachha, have confessed to have robbed more than 35 people.
According to police, the accused failed to give satisfactory answers when questioned and thus were detained and interrogated. The teenagers broke down during questioning.
The police said that they were shocked when the accused disclosed their modus operandi. One of the gang members, according to the police, used to stand near public toilets, gardens and other public places and tried to catch the attention of homosexuals passing by, while other gang members kept waiting in a nearby area to keep a watch on their gang member. Later, when the first gang member got his catch, he took the person to a fixed location and robbed him along with other gang members.
Varachha police Inspector V B Patel said: 8220;This gang had spread huge panic in Varachha area. While committing the robbery, they threatened the victims with making their personal details public. As a result, not a single complaint was lodged as people felt ashamed to contact the police. Not even a single person had come to the police station for their valuables, cash, jewellery mobiles and diamonds.8221;
