PUNE, Nov 12: In yet another attempt to tackle the garbage problem, the Pune Municipal Corporation has made a fervent appeal to the housing socities to take up vermiculture projects.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Deepak Kapoor said in a press statement that the PMC would provide Rs 1000 as subsidy to each housing society. He said Rs 6 lakh, which was allotted for starting vermiculture projects, was lying unused because of lack of response.
The PMC has already started a vermiculture project at its premises, which is open for the public as model. He has appealed the citizens to separate the wet and dry garbage at source to accelerate the cleanliness drive. The wet garbage could be used for the vermuculture project. He said the members of ragpickers association, formed by the SNDT, have been given I-cards. They will separate dry and wet garbage at source, for which every family would have to spend Rs. 10 every month.
