
At a lunch hosted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for visiting Senior Minister of Singapore Goh Chok Tong on March 30, the conversation veered towards the US presidential elections, especially the war of attrition between Democrat contenders Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Attending the lunch were several Cabinet ministers and officials. Most of the dignitaries favoured Obama, saying that he had brought in a whiff of freshness. The PM reserved his opinion on whom he favoured, but wondered aloud: 8220;What do you think about John McCain?8221; The PM seemed to know that the presumptive Republican candidate stood a good chance at the hustings and his coming to power would provide a continuity in the US Government8217;s policies, especially in foreign affairs.
