VADODARA, March 14: Two plays were staged in the Fine Arts faculty of MS University here today to mark the end of the week long Women8217;s Day celebrations jointly organised by Olakh, Parivartan and the Faculties of Fine Arts, Home Science and Social Work.

The first play, Kuch Bhi Hota Hai, was based on Sharad Joshi8217;s Natak Bhakta Prahlad and inspired by the nautanki folk form. A parody on the legend of Prahlad, it began with a jeans clad Hiranyakashyap praying to Lord Shiva. The Lord appears at long last, but is adamant that the Kings wishes cannot be granted. He relents only when he receives some payment in return.

Thereafter the action shifts to a tapori Prahlad who becomes a Ram-bhakta after meeting a girl. The story ends with Hiranyakashap trying to kill Prahlad and his Lord Rama. Narasimha, who is supposed to emerge from a pillar, declines to do so because he has not been paid.

The commentary at the end says that in the present-day8217;s milieu Kuch Bhi Hota Hai; Hiranyakashyaps survive and thrive.

The second play highlighted the various kinds of discrimination that females are subjected to in the country. It dealt with issues ranging from female foeticide to eve-teasing. It was a collaborative effort between the organisers and had an original storyline.

Both plays were directed by Jayram Podwal from Fine Arts.
