The Akanksha Foundation has been adding colour to the drab, muddy lives of Mumbai8217;s slum children for the past seven years. A voluntary organisation, it runs schools which, besides regular education, gives these children tools to help them deal with their environment and skills which can contribute to improving their lives.
Each of the eight schools in the city has a qualified head teacher, an assistant teacher and a helper. And 300 volunteers from various schools and colleges pitch in their efforts to give these children a better home away from home. Health and hygiene are also a part of the curriculum and whenever possible, Akanksha classes are integrated with regular schools. Its fund raising activities have included the auction of the pillow cover autographed by Michael Jackson, held by the Oberoi Hotel.
Now, it is holding an exhibition and sale of paintings and paper products made by the Akanksha children. For those who cannot afford the time to work directly with these kids, here is a chance tocontribute and show that you care. At the ANZ Grindlays Bank, Breach Candy till March 07, 1998.
