Opposition hails Musharraf8217;s speech

  • THE NATION: As Opposition parties have hailed Chief Executive General Pervez Musharraf8217;s televised address, especially, with regard to his announcement of initiating across-the-board accountability and firm commitment to recover the national wealth plundered in the past, what a majority of the Muslim Leaguers have gathered from the speech is that military rule is going to last longer than expected. Barring a few Leaguers who appreciated Gen Musharraf8217;s speech for the reason that they had been ignored by their own leadership, the rest were quite pessimistic about the restoration of democracy in the near future and saw little chance of the loan defaulters volunteering to clear their debts. But they did not want to be quoted for fear of arrest or of the treatment former Punjab Social Welfare Minister Pir Binyameen Rizvi was meted out for condemning the military takeover.
  • Detainedbureaucrats, MPs set free

  • THE NATION: Except one, all parliamentarians, bureaucrats and relatives of other higher-ups who were locked in the local MPA hostel since mid-night between October 12 and 13 have been released. However, four bureaucrats have been reportedly put under house arrest while one of the MPAs is in custody of the military personnel. The MPA had been locked in the new block and no one was allowed to enter. The military authorities and personnel on Sunday afternoon allowed the undeclared detainees to go home. Among the ministers and parliamentarians who were in protective custody in the hostel were Ali Afzal Khan Jadoon, Pir Mohammad Khan and Hidayat Ullah Khan Afridi along with advisor to deposed Chief Minister Engineer Gian Singh and MPA8217;s Iftikhar ud Din Khattak, Javed Akbar Khan, Ashiq Raza Swati and Sakhi Mohammad Tanoli.
