The Personal Computer PC staged a comeback in 2005-06, growing 32 per cent to cross five million units over the year and is now expected to exceed six million units in sales next year, PC industry association MAIT said on Thursday.
The five million mark was expected to be reached this year according to predictions made by MAIT at the close of FY 2005. To achieve the set target will be a relief for the industry since MAIT8217;s prediction for 2004-05, that four million units will be sold, had not been met.
Only 3.63 million PCs could be sold that year, adding up to 17 per cent growth.
Sales this year have, however, kept with a trend established in the last few years of the biggest buyers coming from the booming telecom and banking sectors, followed by government, small office-home office SOHO and home users.
8216;8216;The trend of increased PC purchase in smaller towns and cities seen in previous years continued undiminished,8217;8217; Vinnie Mehta, Executive Director, MAIT, said.
PC sales including desktops and notebooks grossed 5.04 million units this year, with desktops accounting for 4.6 million units, an annual growth of 27 per cent. Notebook shipments exceeded 0.43 million units, a 144 per cent growth.
8216;8216;With sound macroeconomic conditions and buoyant buying sentiment in the market, desktop sales are expected to cross 5.6 million units in fiscal 2006-07, while overall PC shipments would exceed 6 million units,8217;8217; MAIT analysis said.
