IT analyst IDC Corp. has clubbed India with “solid’’ Asia-Pacific neighbours where PC sales have grown rapidly despite slowing export demand and relative sluggishness of the Chinese, Singapore and Hong Kong PC markets.

“Shipments came in slightly higher than expected as most nations posted solid year-on-year gains including key countries like India and Australia,’’ IDC said in its quarterly survey of PC sales. PC sales in India were driven mostly by government buying, a trend noted over several previous quarters even by local industry bodies.

The Asia Pacific region, according to IDC, has done better than expected in the first quarter. “Although economies have been dampened by limited export demand, the situation is improving. Q1 growth in Asia-Pacific (excluding Japan) came in slightly ahead of forecasts and continued improvement in other regions bodes well for future growth,’’ IDC said in its report that was released worldwide on April 15.

The Asia-Pacific market grew by 16 pc, clocking 7.5 mn units. Country-specific sales figures are not released by the analyst, however, it said for the Indian market that confusions over recent tax breaks are sorted out, now creating a “minor positive impact on sales in small and medium businesses”.

In China, PC shipments declined sequentially in the first quarter due to the Lunar Year and a national political conference that delayed government purchases.
