PATIALA, Aug 18: Responding to a call given by the Federation of Central Universities Teachers Association (FEDCUTA), the Punjabi University Teachers Association (PUTA) started a relay fast in front of the office of the vice-chancellor here today . With this, the strike by the university and college teachers entered the eighth day and the second phase after their efforts of holding rallies and sitting in dharnas having failed in soliciting any favourable response from the Central government.
The relay fast was given a start today by five teachers, including PUTA president Dr Balbir Singh Nanda. The other teachers who joined him were Dr K.S. Sidhu, Dr Gurnam Singh, Dr Harvinder Singh Bhatti and Dr Rakesh Mohan Sharma. Dr B.S. Nanda and Dr Jaswinder Singh, president and secretary respectively of PUTA, said the strike was total on the Punjabi University campus.
The teachers, they said, have been forced to take this harsh step as the HRD Ministry was not relenting. They also warned the ministry against issuing misleading statements in the media.
Amritsar: The agitating teachers of the non-government colleges held a massive rally here at the local Hindu College to protest against the non implementation of accepted demands by the Government of Punjab.
Darbari Lal former M L A and general secretary Punjab Pardesh Congress Committee while addressing the rally said that PCC has already passed a resolution and urged upon the Central government to accept the U G C recommendations without any delay.V. K. Sharma, district president, Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union urged the Punjab government to implement the accepted demands of the teachers at the earliest.
Meanwhile, GNDU Teachers Association has decided to hold rallies if need be.
Ludhiana: In response to call given by PCCTU, nearly 400 teachers from the non government affiliated colleges of the district held a massive protest rally here in front of the deputy commissioner’s office.
Flaying the government for its indifferent attitude towards the demands of teachers, K.B.S.Sodhi, secretary, PCCTU dubbed the Akali government as a non functioning government which had failed to redress the grievances of the teachers.
Kanwaljit Singh, PCCTU district president accused the Centre of causing colossal damage to the student community by not inviting AIFUCTO leaders for negotiations even though the indefinite strike of teachers had entered the 8th day.
Gurdaspur: More than 50 teachers of the local government college continued their strike and staged a dharna on the college campus. The strike is affecting the future of about 3,000 students of the Government College Gurdaspur. President of the Government College Teachers Association Surjit Singh Basra came down heavily on the HRD ministry for not implementing the UGC recommendations.
Shimla: The teaching departments of Himachal Pradesh University wore a deserted look as the indefinite strike of teachers entered the eighth day today.
President of HPU Teachers’ Association Rajinder Singh Chauhan reiterated that teachers would not enter classrooms till UGC scales were released by the Human Resource Development ministry.
Dharamsala: Teachers of the Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University at Palampur resumed their indefinite strike for the release of University Grants Commission-recommended pay-scales.
A spokesman of the Joint Action Committee of the protesting teachers of the four colleges of HPAU said that the strike had been continuing since August 11 but for a one-day break on August 15.
Teaching, research and extension work remained paralysed and the campus wore a deserted took. The protestors carried out a procession followed by a dharna outside the varsity library.
Addressing the teachers, B. Prasad, chairman of the Joint Action Committee (JAC), condemned the imposition of Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) by the Haryana government and described it as an undemocratic measure aimed at suppressing the striking teachers. The teachers resolved to continue their struggle till justice was meted out.
