
The Patna police have closed investigation in the murder case of Professor Papia Ghosh.
On July 23, the police filed a supplementary charge sheet before the trial court pronouncing the two key accused 8212; Muskin Mian and Sangoj Kumar Rai 8212; absconders and submitted that investigation in the case has been closed. At present, the case if being tried by a fast track court of Patna, and four persons have been put behind bar. The fifth, a lawyer, has been granted bail.
Papia Ghosh 45 and her maid Malti Devi 80 were murdered in their house in a posh locality of Patna in December last year. The killing had generated an outrage in the academic fraternity and dealt a huge blow to the efforts of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to improve the image of Bihar. The murderers had also looted the professor8217;s car and other valuables from the house.
The police recovered the things looted from Ghosh8217;s house from a garage dump in the outskirts of Patna and arrested five persons, including a lawyer, more than two weeks later. Thereafter, it claimed to have cracked the case and said it was a simple case of murder for robbery. Those arrested also confessed the crime in their statement before the police.
After interrogation of the arrested, names of two other accomplices involved surfaced, and the police said it had launched efforts to arrest them. Though sources in the police said there was definite information about the hideout of the two accused in New Delhi and Kolkata, they don8217;t have the orders to arrest them.
SSP, Patna , Kundan Krishnan denied that they have given up efforts to arrest the two. He said the supplementary chargesheet has been filed to declare the two accused as absconders so that the trial in the case is not held up due to them. 8220;We want speedy trial in the case. If we wait for their arrest, then trial in the case will be obstructed,8221; Krishnan said.
