For the first time since he came to power in Bihar, a group of workers from his own party8212;JDU8212;on Wednesday burnt Chief Minister Nitish Kumar8217;s effigy to protest against the suspension of the party8217;s Chief General Secretary Upendra Kushwaha. Angry party workers also set ablaze the effigy of JDU state President and MP Rajiv Ranjan alias Lalan Singh.
Kushwaha, a party leader belonging to a backward caste, was suspended for six years on Tuesday for anti-party activities. Kushwaha, who had earlier been served a showcause notice, was suspended immediately after he publicly attacked the state President and the Chief Minister.
Workers carrying the party flag, praised Kushwaha and shouted slogans against Lalan Singh, holding him responsible for the the former8217;s expulsion. Saying that the expulsion was a wrong step taken, party workers demanded that it be withdrawn. Though they burnt the effigy of the Chief Minister, they refrained from shouting slogans against him.
A group of about 12 dissident JDU MLAs on Wednesday reportedly met to chalk out a future plan. Meanwhile, some MLAs have already come out in support of Kushwaha and attacked the party leadership. JDU MLA Lalan Paswan said that Kushwaha8217;s expulsion was an attack on the Dalits. Another MLA Manoj Kushwaha said that the suspended leader was a genuine partyman and threatened that party workers would soon start recognising George Fernandes as President of the JDU.
One of the seniormost leaders of the JDU and Rajya Sabha MP Bashisht Narain Singh said that genuine partymen were being fired, as though they were employees in private firms. 8220;This does not augur well for the party and the Government,8221; he said.
