Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala8217;s move to hold panchayat polls before time, in a bid to improve his party8217;s image for the coming Assembly elections, seems to have run into rough weather.
Sources said Governor A.R. Kidwai has not given his consent to the ordinance that can enable the government to hold elections to 8,000-odd panchayats ahead of schedule. As the Opposition 8212; mainly Congress 8212; is already up in arms against Chautala on this 8216;8216;arbitrary8217;8217; move, the Chief Minster is getting jittery on Raj Bhawan8217;s silence, sources said.
Sources in the Indian National Lok Dal INLD said the government proposed to hold elections in October, four months before they are due. The reason, as per the party, is to 8216;8216;remove the tainted panchayats8217;8217; many of which are accused of embezzling funds. Chautala had blamed the corruption in panchayats for the INLD8217;s drubbing in the Lok Sabha elections. 8216;8216;We could not have possibly nailed all the corrupt panchayat members. Now as people tend to link them with the government, hopefully their removal through the elections would help improve our chances in the elections,8217;8217; a source said.
