Pakistan set to re-enter C8217;Wealth

The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group will meet in May to talk about the restoration of Pak's membership.

The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group CMAG will meet on May 7-8 in London in connection with the restoration of Pakistan8217;s membership in the grouping, from which it was suspended following President Pervez Musharraf8217;s imposition of the emergency rule last year.

The members of the Commonwealth had discussed the issue of Pakistan8217;s membership after a new government was formed in Islamabad following the February 18 general election.

A formal announcement in this regard will be made by the CMAG in London, the Daily Times quoted diplomatic sources as saying.

On November 10 last year, the CMAG had given a 10-day ultimatum to Musharraf to lift the emergency rule he had imposed or face the suspension of Pakistan8217;s membership. Musharraf withdrew the emergency in December.

Some leading members of the grouping, including Britain, have assured Pakistan that its membership will be restored. During a recent telephone conversation with Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, his British counterpart David Milliband had said he hoped that Pakistan would soon become an active member of the Commonwealth.

Pakistan was earlier also suspended from the Commonwealth in 1999 when Musharraf staged a military coup to depose then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Its membership was restored in 2004.
