Virtually rejecting the Opposition’s claim that the Mayawati government had been reduced to minority, Uttar Pradesh Governor Vishnu Kant Shastri today said the Opposition has so far not furnished any proof of its claim.
‘‘The Opposition has so far not put forward any proof before the Governor to enable him to prima facie conclude that the present government has been reduced to minority,’’ a Raj Bhavan communique said. Though there had been newspaper reports about claim and counter claims in this regard the Opposition had so far not furnished any proof of its claim, the communique added.
The combined Opposition comprising the Samajwadi Party, Congress, Rashtriya Kranti Party and the Rashtriya Lok Dal have been demanding convening of a special Assembly session for a fresh trial of strength of the Mayawati government claiming that it had been reduced to minority following withdrawal of support by the 14-member RLD.
The communique said RLD president Ajit Singh, along with a delegation, had met the governor on May 30 and informed him that the party had withdrawn support to the Mayawati government. On May 31, Congress legislature group leader Pramod Tewari met the governor and handed him a similar demand, it said.
Later, leader of Samata Party legislature group Raja Ram Pandey met the governor on June 4 and gave him a letter affirming his support to the government, the communique said. It said another Congress delegation had met Shastri on June 6 and sought an security cover for the newly elected UPCC President Jagadambika Pal after an attempt on his life. The delegation also sought the dismissal of the government and urged him to invite the Opposition to form a government, the communique said.
It went on to say that senior BJP minister Lalji Tandon had on June 7 informed the governor in writing that some newspaper had been publishing misleading reports that some BJP MLAs were in touch with the Opposition parties.
