Two days before arrival of Chief Minister Mayawati from the five-nation tour, the unified Opposition looked frustrated for not being in a position to topple her government after withdrawal of support by the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD).

‘‘The government is running on mercy of the Governor, support of the Assembly Speaker and blessings of the Prime Minister,’’ said state Congress chief Jagdambika Pal.

Political activity in the state capital started on Sunday around noon following arrival of the RLD chief Ajit Singh who met Rashtriya Kranti Party chief Kalyan Singh, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and the party general secretary Amar Singh along with Pal and the CLP leader Pramod Tiwari. The meeting, however, ended inconclusively as was evident from the statements of those present in the meeting.

‘‘We have decided to go to people’s court to build up mass pressure for dismissal of the government,’’ said Mulayam while talking after the meeting. ‘‘The BJP leadership is intimidating my legislators and is also threatening to lodge criminal cases if they dare to switch loyalty ,” said Ajit.

The Opposition camp has also been spreading the message for last two days that they are preparing to go for a parade of legislators supporting them before Governor Vishnu Kant Shastri. But on this point also they developed a cold feet today. ‘‘There is no point for us to go for parade because the onus of proving the majority is on the government after RLD walked out of it,’’ said Kalyan Singh.

‘‘I appeal to the legislators that they should not get disheartened with the propaganda of snap polls. We can form an alternative government,’’ asserted Kalyan. The ruling coalition has also tried to build pressure on the legislators by indicating that either this government would continue or there would be mid-term polls. ‘‘The only option left in case the government is toppled will be the snap polls,’’ the state BJP chief Vinay Katiyar said during his Jagran Yatra at Ballia. BJP Legislature Party leader Lalji Tandon has also given similar indications.
