A day after the suicide of OBC activist Bharat Karad, allegedly as a mark of protest against Maharashtra government’s decision to issue a Government Resolution (GR) implementing Hyderabad Gazette paving way for Maratha community to acquire Kunbi (OBC) status, OBC leaders vowed that the fight against the GR will continue.

Senior minister and OBC leader Chhagan Bhujbal on Friday visited the house of Karad at Wangdari village in Latur district along with NCP MLA Dhananjay Munde and announced that he will fight battles in the court as well as on the streets to protect OBC reservation. “We are fighting for the justified rights of OBCs. We fully believe in the judiciary of this country. We are ready to fight battles in the court and on streets. But I urge all members of the OBC community to not lose hope,” said Bhujbal.

Bharat Karad, 35, was an active member of the movement to safeguard OBC reservation. “He was worried that the GR will end OBC reservation. In the past few days, he was constantly telling us that the OBC reservation is now over. He jumped from the bridge over Manjra River,” said Ram Karad, his brother. He added that Bharat was worried about his kids. According to a police official, a suicide note was found in his shirt.

After visiting the family, Bhujbal announced that he will take care of the education of Karad’s children.

“Karad committed suicide by writing a note which blamed the state government for destroying OBCs. This is a painful incident. The state government has acted in an unjustifiable manner by issuing this GR. The Mahayuti government is responsible for the death of Karad,” said Congress legislative party leader Vijay Wadettiwar.

He said that Karad’s sacrifice will not go in vain and the fight to cancel the GR will continue until the goal is achieved.
