CHANDIGARH, March 3: Holi was enthusiastically celebrated in the City and satellite towns, SAS Nagar and Panchkula, yesterday. One stabbing incident and half-a-dozen road accidents marred an otherwise peaceful day. Besides, over 500 motorists were challaned for various offences during the day.
According to police sources, Sanjiv Kumar, alias Kaka, and Daroga both residents of Sector 23 allegedly attacked Neeraj of Sector 23, with knives, when he did not allow them into his house to play Holi as they were drunk. The police have registered a case.
CTU buses were reportedly involved in three out of at least six road accidents that took place during the day. The three have been hospitalised.
If no eve-teasing case was registered during the day it was largely because policemen were deployed at almost all likely trouble-spots. Many drivers exhibited admirable wristwork-and-footwork turning their vehicles adroitly the moment they spotted khakhi-clad men brandishing lathis outside women8217;s hostels. This was particularly observed near the Sector 11 Government College for Girls, Punjab University womens8217; hostels and architecture hostel in Sector 11.
Entry to the PU campus was not easy with police mainly allowing only families in. Police were also deployed inside the campus. Nevertheless, the campus saw enough festivity to colour the water in the fountains. Police said they did not stop girls wanting to go out with their friends.
Several organisations arranged bashes. One was a Holi Dhamaka organised at the Rock Garden in aid of orphans, which was attended by bureaucrats besides a few hundred gals and guys. At most of these melas ample intake of liquor and bhang guaranteed that quot;a good time was had by allquot;.
No untoward incident was reported from Dera Bassi.
PGI doctors treated three for eye injuries received on Holi. According to PGI Ophthalmology Department head Dr Amod Gupta: 8220;Most of the accidents occur due to drunken driving. Every year we get few cases like this. Eye injury sustained in a road accident is extremely dangerous since glass tears the delicate parts of the eye8221;.
The City offered the usual sight of guys in cars and on two-wheelers sans silencers howling at the top of their lungs, splashing colour in all directions. What to talk of triple-riding, even four on a two-wheeler was common. About helmets 8230; don8217;t ask. All but 327 of them escaped being challaned for driving without helmets. Traffic police had a field day, cutting 503 challans for various offences.
Panchkula: Hundreds of whooping and hollering Holi-revellers gathered at Funcity near here. Sixty prizes including T-shirts and cassettes were given to the 8220;lucky8221; participants.
