Senior lawyer Ram Jethmalani said the Congress chief would herself give a ‘‘fitting reply’’ to the allegations against her in the Bofors case tomorrow even as the Congress today demanded an apology from PM A.B. Vajpayee for ‘‘maligning’’ Sonia Gandhi by suggesting the CBI look into ‘‘fresh evidence’’.
‘‘As far as I know, Sonia Gandhi would give a fitting reply tomorrow to questions posed by Arun Jaitley on the scam,’’ Jethmalani said at the Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah here. Jethmalani is defending the Hinduja brothers, accused in the Bofors scam.
‘‘We strongly condemn this attempt by the PM to malign Sonia Gandhi and influence people at the height of an election campaign. Nothing short of an apology from the PM would satisfy the nation,’’ said a statement released by Dr Manmohan Singh, Pranab Mukherjee, Arjun Singh, K. Natwar Singh and Ahmed Patel.
‘‘Newspapers today, especially The Indian Express, has brought out candidly the story of The Asian Age was the same it published more than five years ago,’’ the statement said.
The BJP stuck to its demand that Sonia break her silence on the issue. ‘‘She must come out with the facts known to her if she is aspiring for the high constitutional posts in the country,’’ Law Minister Arun Jaitley said today. ‘‘The continued silence…indicates desire for concealment of truth,’’ Jaitley said.
