Eyeing more efficient and cost-effective means of energy, Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani today said that the nation should harness nuclear and solar energy to quench its energy needs.

Delivering the sixth Darbari Seth Memorial Lecture here, Ambani said, 8220;We cannot survive on fossil fuels for long. Nuclear energy is the future. If we are able to find an economical way of tapping energy from them, these noble metals can provide energy for the next thousands of years,8221; Ambani said.

Expressing belief in the power of innovation, the chairman said, 8220;I am sure this innovation will lead to an economical way of getting energy from nuclear sources.8221;

He also said that the world needs to shift to nuclear energy not just because oil is not going to last forever but also because nuclear fuel would turn out to be cheaper.

8220;The Stone Age did not end because the there was no more stone left in the world. Similarly, I think the 8216;oil age8217; would not end because all oil would be exhausted but because renewables would make much more sense due to the innovations done by human beings,8221; he said.

Ambani, who owns the biggest oil refinery in the country, said there were already indications that the prices of solar cells are going to come down substantially in the next few years making solar energy a very attractive possibility.
