Nothing fishy

Finally, there’s good news for small fish farmers and retailers constrained by the perishability of their product. The Ludhiana-based Central Institute of Post Harvest Engg. and Technology (CIPHET) has developed a mobile cool chamber for a rickshaw, which can store and transport 150 kg fish and keep the freshwater iced fish fresh for seven to eight days.

The chamber, with a 1:1 ice to fish ratio, has been sent to seven fishery institutes of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research for multi-location trial, said Dr R T Patil, Director of CIPHET. The feedback from the Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture, Chennai, has been favourable, he said, adding that it was hygienic and ended up saving money. The cost for storage and transportation has come to Rs 19,000 at the research fabrication, said Patil.

A financial evaluation shows that a person can sustain this cycle-rickshaw by selling 20 kg fish with a profit margin of Rs 10 per kg. However, he can make a profit of Rs 5,000 per month by selling 50 kg and Rs 20,000 per month by utilising the full capacity of 150 kg of fish at a profit margin of Rs 10 per kg fish.

India ranks fourth in global fish production, with an annual production of 6 million tonnes and contributes 1.4 per cent to the country’s GDP. India has 19,370 fish reservoirs spread across 3,153,366 hectares.
