Istekhar Ahmad (49), who works as a security guard in Ghaziabad, on Tuesday morning allegedly hacked his sister-in-law to death at their home at JJ Colony in West Delhi’s Khyala with a meat cleaver, chopped off her daughter’s finger and injured his wife too. He suspected that his wife was planning to leave the house, and his sister-in-law was helping her. Ahmad has been arrested, said police.
Police said the accused was caught in the act by family members and handed over to police before he could escape. The deceased has been identified as Nusrat (39), who worked as a bouncer. Her daughter, Saniya (20), and Ahmad’s wife, Akbari (42), were found injured and were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.
One of Saniya’s fingertips was chopped off while Akbari was injured on the head following the attack, said officers.
According to the police, the incident took place around 8 am on the second floor of the house. “The accused is the brother-in-law of the deceased. He allegedly suspected that Nusrat was supporting his wife amid ongoing tensions between the couple. On Tuesday morning, he attacked Nusrat, her daughter, and sister-in-law during a confrontation,” said DCP West Darade Sharad Bhaskar.
Ahmad allegedly discovered that his wife was planning to leave him and that Nusrat, a mother of four daughters, had helped plan her escape. His wife and niece were injured after they allegedly tried to intervene and stop Ahmad’s attack.
Nusrat’s husband is lodged in the jail and she was the sole breadwinner of her family. Before working as a bouncer, she used to work as a civil defence volunteer.
Akbari’s son Sonu said, “In the morning, my aunt Nusrat was still not fully awake when she saw him with a tiffin. She must have thought that he was going for work. He had a cleaver in the tiffin and she had no idea. He lives in Loni in Ghaziabad. He used to come sometimes.”
Sone added, “She told him to sit and have something to eat. However, he didn’t listen. She had no idea what was about to transpire. He took out the cleaver and struck her in the waist, neck and chest.”
He added that when Saniya came to save her, she also got injured in the finger and head. “Then my mother also came to intervene but he struck her too in the neck. I want justice for my family. Nusrat used to work as a bouncer. She used to wake up early and leave for work around 9 am,” he said.
An FIR has been filed under sections 103(1) (murder) and 109(1) (attempt to murder) of the BNS at Khyala police station. The accused is being questioned, and further investigation is underway, police said.
