Embarrassed by the continuous misuse of red beacons on vehicles by BJP leaders and Government officials, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh has decided not to use it from Thursday.

The Chief Minister went to office without the red light on his car on Thursday, while his council of ministers have been given the freedom to decide whether to use the red beacons on their vehicles or not. 8220;I have decided not to use the red beacon,8221; Singh said.

Sources said the step to remove the red beacon from the CM8217;s car was apparently taken after a complaint by some dissidents to BJP chief Rajnath Singh recently. 8220;The BJP central leadership was told that some party leaders and officials were misusing red beacons atop their vehicles though they were not entitled to do so,8221; sources said.

Through this move, all secretaries and other senior officials too stand to lose the red lights on their vehicles except for the DGP, Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and field officials dealing with law and order, they said. Though no reason was given for the CM8217;s sudden decision, sources said the move would not compromise Singh8217;s security.

Security officials said since Singh is entitled to Z-plus security. The move has a striking similarity to a 2003 order issued by the then CM Ajit Jogi directing the removal of beacons from all government and party leaders8217; vehicles.
