They say God made world in six days and on the seventh, he rested. But Agra officials have so much to undo before a Supreme Court deadline to clean up the city that they can’t afford to. So, tomorrow, a Sunday, has been declared a working day for all Agra Municipal Corporation (AMC) workers and senior officials.

The Supreme Court recently pulled up the AMC for the filthy state the city is in and gave it initially three days to clean up. Nonplussed officials pleaded that was not enough and got the time extended to seven days.

But as that deadline nears, officials are realising years of neglect can’t be wiped off in a month, forget a week. So, in the early hours of the morning, municipal workers can be seen at work. But despite their best efforts, problems like mechanical failures in the long ill-kept trucks and tippers keep slowing them down.

Agra Municipal Commissioner has also urged the people to help them keep the city clean by throwing garbage in bins.
