MUMBAI, Aug 9: The Election Commission EC has not issued a directive to remove flags atop temples, State chief electoral officer D K Sankaran today clarified.

Sankaran, in a statement here, denied reports in a section of the press that EC had issued orders to remove flags on Vitthal8217; temple of Pandharpur.

There are no restrictions on use of religious flags during the Ganesh festival also, Sankaran said.

Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde had taken strong objection to EC8217;s attempt to remove the saffron flag atop Vitthal8217; temple and ban of saffron flags during Ganesh festival.

Meanwhile, State Chief Secretary Arun Bongirwar appealed to district election officers to be vigilant and strictly implement the election code of conduct.

Bongirwar was speaking at a meeting here to take stock of law and order situation during the election period, an official release said.

The meeting was attended by Sankaran, additional chief secretary Home V Ranganathan, DGP Arvind Inamdar, city police chief Ronnie Mendonca, all district election officers and senior police officials.
