A day after his party MPs raised their voice in the Lok Sabha to protest the attacks on migrants from north India in Maharashtra, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar dashed a letter to the Prime Minister on Tuesday, urging the Centre to intervene and advise Maharashtra to take appropriate measures.

In his one-page letter, Kumar, without naming of Raj Thackeray or his party, remarked that “hooliganism” and “violence” have been unleashed in Mumbai and other parts of the state targeting Hindi-speaking people, especially those from Bihar.

Earlier (on February 6), Kumar had written a letter to his Maharashtra counterpart Vilasrao Deshmukh expressing his deep concern over violence against Hindi-speaking people and urging him to take appropriate action. Attaching a copy of the letter, Kumar has pointed out that violence against migrants continues and, “it is time that the Union Government advises the state of Maharashtra to take appropriate measures.”

The CM’s letter says hundreds of people are coming back having fled in terror from Maharashtra. Kumar mentions that in the Upper House of the state, members cutting across party lines had expressed their anguish over the issue and urged him to take up the matter with the PM. “I would urge you to look into the happenings in Mumbai and other areas of Maharashtra, to see that relief is given to the persons who have suffered.”
