New York gets busier and more noisy as the 62nd United Nations General Assembly meets.

The 62nd UN General Assembly started Tuesday and will end on October 3. During this period, New Yorkers will have to put up with some of the inconvenience related to traffic and pedestrian flows.

The New York Police Department says that drivers should expect closures in different areas of the city related to security and increased motorcade traffic.

Traffic in the vicinity of leading hotels and the UN will be especially heavy, they added.

With about 70 heads of government and representatives from more than 150 countries attending the UN gathering, security officials are not taking any chances.

This has resulted in thousands of security personnel, including police officers, converging on the 8220;Big Apple8221; as New York is popularly known.

Also roped in are hundreds of firefighters and medical personnel.

Several roads leading up to the UN headquarters in mid-town Manhattan are lined with police cars and fire trucks.

And on thoroughfares where the leaders are supposed to travel past, no cars are allowed to be parked on the sides.

Security is not just on the ground but also up in the air. Police helicopters hover in the sky, especially above the UN headquarters as well as the leading hotels, where the leaders are staying.
