
MUMBAI, DEC 19: Chandrakant K Bakshi, noted Gujarati writer, took oath as the new sheriff of Mumbai at a short swearing-in ceremony at the Raj Bhavan today. Bakshi who replaces Kulwant Singh Kohli, will assume office on Sunday. The oath was read out by Maharashtra Governor Dr P C Alexander.
Born in Palanpur, Gujarat on August 20, 1932 Bakshi is widely hailed for his contribution to Gujarati literature. A former journalist and college principal, he has written 146 books including 26 novels, short stories, travelogues, autobiography and history books. 8220;The new sheriff is a highly acclaimed person from the field of literature. I am sure he will put some of his good ideas in the field of education to use during his term,8221; said Chief Minister Manohar Joshi. He said that the Sheriff8217;s post held importance and was respected as he could perform the duties of receiving important visiting dignitaries.
Bakshi himself was not willing to comment on his agenda but said, 8220;I am walking with the sheriff8217;s rule book inmy pocket to find out what I can do and what I cannot.8221;
