The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) on Tuesday decided to name the Congress-led coalition Government as Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) after their leader DD Lapang was sworn in as Chief Minister on Monday.
The CLP meeting also made Lapang the MUA chairman and Independent legislator AT Mondal its general secretary. Three Independent legislators are the only coalition partners of the Congress.
The Congress is still short of two legislators in the Assembly with an effective strength of 59 MLAs. Election to the Baghmara constituency has been rescheduled for March 22 after the death of the Congress candidate.
Interestingly, 24 hours after Lapang was sworn in as CM, he still does not have a single minister.
The fate of the newly-formed MUA coalition Government is still uncertain as the UDP-NCP combine Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA) has approached the Supreme Court against Meghalaya Governor S S Sidhu’s decision to invite Lapang to form the Government.
It is unlikely that any of the MPA partners — Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM), Hills State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) or the two Independent legislators — are going to switch sides. If the Congress is hoping to make inroads into the MPA camp, it will only be after the Supreme Court verdict.
